Yes, a heat pump cools your home. In fact, for cooling purposes, a heat pump IS an air conditioner — same technology, same physics, same result. The only difference is that a heat pump can reverse direction and pull heat INTO your home in winter too. In summer, it works exactly like a central AC.

This confuses a lot of BC homeowners because "heat pump" sounds like a heating-only device. It's not. Every heat pump sold in BC in 2026 is also a full central air conditioning system. This guide covers what that actually looks like during a BC heat wave — sizing, performance, electrical requirements, and whether it makes sense to install one now for the rest of summer.

Why this is a bigger deal in BC than it used to be

BC used to be a mild-summer province. Most homes in Langley, Surrey, and the rest of the Fraser Valley were built without air conditioning because they didn't need it. How a heat pump cools (the short version)

The technology is identical to a fridge. A refrigerant absorbs heat from one place and dumps it in another. In your fridge, heat is pulled out of the interior and dumped into your kitchen. In a heat pump running in cooling mode, heat is pulled out of your home and dumped outside.

Nothing about the physics is different from a traditional central AC. What IS different is that a heat pump has a reversing valve that lets the refrigerant flow the other direction in winter — pulling heat OUT of cold outdoor air and dumping it into your home.

Practically, this means:

  • Same cold-air output as a central AC. Same feel, same coverage.
  • Same ductwork if you have existing ducts. The indoor air handler replaces your furnace.
  • Same or better efficiency than a modern AC. Heat pumps in cooling mode routinely hit SEER2 ratings of 16-22, matching or beating standalone AC units.

Sizing matters. This is where cheap installs go wrong — a undersized heat pump will struggle to keep up on peak days, and an oversized one will short-cycle and never dehumidify properly.

  1. Homeowners thinking they need a separate AC on top of a heat pump. They don't. A single heat pump replaces both furnace and AC.
  2. Installing a heat pump but leaving the old gas furnace for backup. This is called a "dual fuel" or "hybrid" setup. It has its place in very cold climates, but in the Fraser Valley the heat pump can handle 95%+ of winter days on its own. Dual fuel usually adds cost without meaningful benefit.
  3. Sizing based on the old furnace. Your old gas furnace might have been 100,000 BTU/hr. That doesn't mean you need a 100,000 BTU/hr heat pump. Modern homes with better insulation often need half the capacity of the equipment they're replacing.
